A standing room only crown filled the Town Council Chambers on March 7 to commemorate the signing of the Portsmouth Compact 375 years ago that formally established the town. Tracey Croce, the State Archivist, travelled from the State archives in Providence, under Portsmouth Police escort, to bring the original compact document to the ceremony.
The document was escorted into the Council Chambers by the Newport Artillery Company under the command of Colonel Bob Edenbach.
Following a flute ensemble rendition of "Cockles and Mussels" and a choral ensemble singing of "America the Beautiful", both from Portsmouth High School, Jim Seveney provided opening remarks. The keynote address was provided by historian Jim Garman who provided historical context for the event.
Doug Smith, Chairman of the Portsmouth 375th Committee, provided closing remarks and all present were able to view the original compact "up close and personal".
Following the event, refeshments we served along with "Portsmouth Anniversay Blend" coffee provided by Custom House Coffee of Portsmouth.
